The complex intersectionality of traits that make each one of us who we are. These traits extend well beyond the skin-deep differences of demographics and gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can look at these dimensions as three components of the diversity wheel: primary, secondary, and tertiary diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Primary dimensions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Diversity we\u2019re born with, like sex, ethnicity, and mental and physical ability.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Secondary dimensions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Experiences, affinities, hobbies, and religious beliefs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Tertiary diversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 How we interpret the world and confront challenges.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These layers of diversity contribute to who we are as individuals. Understanding, recognizing, and celebrating these differences is essential for success in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coachdiversity.com\/organizational-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through these dimensions, let\u2019s explore what diversity truly means and learn how to elevate diversity in your workplace environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defining Diversity Dimensions<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity is more than ethnicity and gender. While these two dimensions certainly make up what it means to be diverse, a host of other characteristics can contribute to our backgrounds and experiences, like parental status, union affiliation, communication style, management status, national origin, and marital status.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for these other traits that make a diverse team:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Generational drama aside, working with people of all ages allows an organization to get a range of experiences. For instance, younger workers will bring youthful exuberance and insight into what\u2019s \u201cin,\u201d while older workers can contribute with years of work experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ethnicity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013\u00a0Social groups with similar racial characteristics driven by geographical, biological, and evolutionary adaptations. Ethnicity also includes experiences, behaviors, and values passed from generation to generation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Religion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Spiritual beliefs are a powerful motivator and help individuals form a sense of identity. Traditions, holidays, and practices may involve alternative schedules or time and space to practice daily prayer rituals.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Socioeconomic status<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 An individual\u2019s socioeconomic background is more than just money. It\u2019s neighborhoods, educational background, restaurants, hang-out spots, and social status. That loyalty can transition to civilian work, as can leadership skills. However, veterans aren\u2019t likely to put up with office politics. Many have experienced false promises in the military, and they don\u2019t deserve that after serving.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Geographic location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013\u00a0Remote and WFH arrangements allow organizations to recruit from virtually anywhere. When removing geographic limits, you can expand talent pools and find your next all-star.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many individuals come from diverse backgrounds. Each member of these unique groups brings something that enriches and positively benefits the team and organization.
