And as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coachdiversity.com\/organizational-services\/inclusive-leadership-training\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team leader<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s up to you to wield that pen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, inclusive language is the engine that powers an inclusive environment and starts with leadership. Inclusive language comes from a set of rules that work to break the systemic discrimination that our language contains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out how everyday phrases have a negative connotation and the inclusive terms to use instead. Unfortunately, not all of these words make for inclusive language. Many day-to-day words, phrases, idioms, and slang terms have come about due to racist, sexist, or oppressive actions and behaviors. Here\u2019s a look at some examples of non-inclusive language and their inclusive counterparts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Gender identity, sex, and sexuality<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender identity and sexual orientation have long come under attack. Members of the LGBTQ community champion gender-neutral terms through the use of gender-neutral pronouns and gender-neutral language. For example,<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cOk, everyone, heads-up!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cOk, you guys, heads-up!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter is an example of gender-inclusive language; by replacing \u201cguys\u201d with \u201ceveryone,\u201d you include more people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cWe have people of all sexual orientations on the team.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cWe have people of all sexual preferences on the team.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implying there\u2019s a preference or choice is a heterosexual bias.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you\u2019ll want to use gendered terms like \u201cmanpower\u201d or \u201cchairman.\u201d These terms show the institutional nature of non-inclusive language, and you can replace them easily with \u201cworkforce\u201d and \u201cchairperson.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Disability and invisible illness<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusive workplaces open doors for those with disabilities. The employment rate for disabled individuals is low, and the language used in workplaces is a driving factor in the statistics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cJohn is a person with a disability.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cJohn is handicapped.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handicapped is an outdated and non-ableist term. Plus, a person with a disability isn\u2019t handicapped, and many people with disabilities live fulfilling lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Mental, emotional, and cognitive diversity<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health is a critical issue, and suicides are rising worldwide. Many feelings of self-harm are a result of negative connotations around mental, emotional, and cognitive diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cThe amount of work was overwhelming.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cThe amount of work was insane.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with mental disabilities find language like \u201ccrazy\u201d or \u201cpsycho\u201d demeaning. Those struggling with PTSD, OCD, or other emotional and mental challenges can easily fall victim in non-inclusive environments.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cJane is neurodiverse.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cJane has a mental disability.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with autism or other cognitive impairments can find an inclusive environment when you include language that supports differences instead of dividing them.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Physicality<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physicality, or how someone looks, breeds biases of all kinds, from gender bias to sexual orientation bias. Avoid the non-inclusive language of some of these phrases by eliminating them from your team\u2019s vocabulary.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTransgender males\/females aren\u2019t real males\/females.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEveryone wants to be an acronym these days.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou throw like a girl.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe looks like a dude.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should really lose some weight.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comments about how people look damage self-esteem and contribute to the mental health crisis. Race, ethnicity, and nationality<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discrimination based on race, ethnicity, and nationality is present in our language through slang terms like \u201cgypped\u201d or \u201cghetto.\u201d These terms are derogatory to specific groups of people based on their nationalities or ethnicities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cThey are from systematically minoritized groups.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cThey are minorities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s best to use more inclusive language that reflects the systematic marginalization of people of color.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cThey are from a developing nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cThey are from a third-world country.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of any thriving workplace culture is to make everyone feel included. Terms like \u201cthird-world\u201d attempt to divide people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Religion<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In America, we have freedom of religion, and in that vein, we need to be tolerant of others\u2019 religious beliefs. Many times, spiritual discrimination pairs with ethnic discrimination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say this: \u201cThey have Arab heritage.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not this: \u201cThey\u2019re probably Muslim.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is it rude to assume someone\u2019s religious identification, but it\u2019s hurtful to assume someone practices a specific faith because of their ethnicity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Acquired diversity<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all diversity is with us from birth. Individuals can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/12\/how-diversity-can-drive-innovation#:~:text=Inherent%20diversity%20involves%20traits%20you,can%20give%20you%20gender%20smarts.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquire diversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through various means, such as working in another country. The lack of language skills can prevent effective communication, but the experience is invaluable. To make guest workers feel welcome, avoid using outdated language like \u201cLimited English Proficiency\u201d and use \u201cEnglish learners\u201d instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acquired diversity can also take the form of caring for someone with a disability.
